For many years, the disease of bronchiectasis has not received the attention it deserves, considering that recent research (Quint et al. European Respiratory Journal, in press 2015) shows that more than 300,000 people in the UK are living with the condition.
There has been so little research into bronchiectasis that even the most basic questions about why patients get chest infections (called exacerbations) are not really known, and there are many questions about the best long term treatments that still need answering. We are seeing and hearing all to often of people being diagnosed far to late in life with this condition.
Often patients have been wrong diagnosed with having Asthma from a young age and in fact many years later a diagnosis of bronchiectasis is made. This means patients have missed out on the right preventative treatments over a period of many years and as such their bronchiectasis has not been correctly treated often causing the condition to worsen at a quicker rate.
There are many ways you can get involved and raise money to help fight Bronchiectasis.
