Why Give

For many years, the disease of bronchiectasis has not received the attention it deserves, considering that recent research (Quint et al. European Respiratory Journal, in press 2015) shows that more than 300,000 people in the UK are living with the condition.

There has been so little research into bronchiectasis that even the most basic questions about why patients get chest infections (called exacerbations) are not really known, and there are many questions about the best long term treatments that still need answering. We are seeing and hearing all to often of people being diagnosed far to late in life with this condition.

Often patients have been wrong diagnosed with having Asthma from a young age and in fact many years later a diagnosis of bronchiectasis is made. This means patients have missed out on the right preventative treatments over a period of many years and as such their bronchiectasis has not been correctly treated often causing the condition to worsen at a quicker rate.

Future Developments

Bronchiectasis is one of the most neglected diseases in respiratory medicine. Currently there is no clear definition or classification of the condition and very little is known about its true prevalence or its impact on length and quality of life. There are no specifically licensed therapies and few specialist clinical services. Significant research is needed in order to improve the quality of care of patients with this condition.

Research Needed

There are clear research needs in order to develop an evidence base for understanding the pathophysiology of bronchiectasis. In clinical research, there is an urgent need to determine the optimal long-term therapies that maintain lung function and quality of life, and reduce exacerbations. The optimal treatment interventions for exacerbations also require further study.

We are the UK’s only Bronchiectasis research charity. The research we aim to support will help us understand the causes of Bronchiectasis, find new treatments, turn discoveries in the lab into new treatments and ultimately find a cure. We rely entirely on donations and we could not continue without the generosity of people and organisations that fund this work.
